SUMMARY: Responsible to the Program Manager of the designated Community Kids site to provide direct care for children and instruct children in activities designed to promote social, emotional, physical and intellectual growth within a safe environment.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:
- Provide a healthy and safe environment that is conducive to positive learning, playing and growing.
- Implement the CK curriculum and provide learning materials that are age and developmentally appropriate.
- Plan, develop and supervise individual and group activities to stimulate growth in language, social, emotional and physical growth.
- Provide direct care and assistance to children with their basic needs including eating, dressing, hand washing, toilet training and diaper changing.
- Maintain standards of safety in all aspects of the program and understand and follow all emergency procedures.
- Interact with children frequently while showing interest and modeling, respect and affection regardless of race, gender, background or culture of children or family members.
- Implement “Conscious Discipline Techniques” for positive guidance within the classroom(s).
- Encourage independence in children while teaching and modeling positive approaches to behaving constructively.
- Assist children in dealing with emotions, positive and negative, while expecting them to behave in developmentally appropriate ways.
- Promote healthy meal and snack times as pleasant and social learning experiences
- Responsible for maintaining center and anecdotal records and portfolios for all children to allow for regular and effective communication with parents.
- Successfully complete and provide documentation of all required annual hours for continuing education.
- Understand and follow policies and philosophies of Community Action, Community Kids Learning Centers and state licensing rules for child care centers
- Assist or supervise in other classrooms or child care sites as required
- Complete related work as assigned within the scope of responsibility and skill required for the job

- Maintain; organize, clean and sanitized classroom.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Responsible for the supervision of the children under his/her care in the classroom.
· Supervision of assistant teachers, volunteers or student teachers within their designated classroom.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- High School Diploma/GED required.
- The following guidelines based on education and experience are used to determine the placement of the a teacher on the salary schedule:
- Teacher I: Minimum educational requirement and work experience in early childhood or elementary education is preferred. Any combination of education or experience will be considered.
- Teacher II: Minimum of a one or two year child care diploma or one year of an AAS Degree in child care from an institution of higher learning or Child Development Associate Credential issued by the Council for Early Childhood Professional Recognition or any approved ECE Credential.
- Teacher III: Licensed from DPI instruction to act as a pre-kindergarten or EC Exceptional Educational Needs teacher or 3 years of at least 36 credits from an institution of higher learning, including 2 approved courses for credit in ECE, or a Certificate from American Montessori Society or Association Montessori International or BS degree in ECE/Development or DPI License in Pre-K or related field and/or master degree in EC related field.
- Teacher IV: BS degree in Education with up-to-date DPI Certification and enrolled in a Masters Program, or Masters Degree in any field.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
· Must have good communication skills, including the ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to children, parents and staff. Bilingual in English and Spanish is highly desirable.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
· Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide with whole numbers, fractions and percentages.
REASONING ABILITY:
· Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out written or oral instructions.
· Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
· Must be able to conduct smooth and unregimented transitions, be flexible and handle routine tasks in a relaxed and individualized manner.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
· See educational requirements.
· Must complete a minimum of 25 hours of approved early childhood education training annually.
· Access to reliable, licensed,insured driver and transportation

· Must be extremely reliable and dependable.
· Must have knowledge of developmentally appropriate practices and environmental ratings.
· Ability to communicate and work with parents, children, co-workers, managers and directors.
