Community Action, Inc. is pleased to announce its first “Strike Out Poverty” bowling event planned for March 21, 2015 at Lake Geneva Lanes. The fundraiser will benefit Twin Oaks Shelter for the Homeless and Community Action’s other anti-poverty programs in Walworth County.

In 2014, Community Action guided 740 Walworth County residents on a pathway out of poverty. Nearly half of those served were children. These families are increasing their household income through job training, securing low-interest loans on reliable vehicles, achieving budgetary goals for rental assistance and finding a safe place to stay.

Community Action’s largest program in Walworth County is Twin Oaks Shelter for the Homeless, which annually serves an average of 175 men, women and children. Residents at Twin Oaks are typically homeless for three to six months before finding shelter at the facility in Darien. They find refuge in friends’ houses, in cars and in tents outdoors.

Once accepted into Twin Oaks, families stay an average of three months. They participate in weekly workshops to learn budgeting job interview skills and other life lessons to help them be successful once they graduate from the program.
